Pew Center on the States Public Safety Performance Project highlights trends in state imprisonment rates. This is very useful information for victim advocates and justice professionals
Restitution is one mechanism by which the justice system can ensure that the perpetrator, not the victim, bears the financial burden of crime. Despite laws affording victims statutory and constitutional rights to restitution, victims are fighting every day to secure full restitution orders and to recover even pennies on the dollar of those orders. As part of its work to make this right more meaningful, the National Crime Victim Law Institute (NCVLI) is litigating the issue in four cases pending in appellate courts right now, from a DUII case in front of the Oregon Supreme Court to a case in front of the Utah Supreme Court involving sexual misconduct with a minor. Click here to read more about the right and these cases and check back for updates.
The “Making Restitution Real” Toolkit is finalized and available online from the National Center for Victims of Crime. In addition to practical tips for victims and practitioners to improve restitution management, there are links to great resources created by state and local agencies to “make restitution real.”
